Senior Manager :

Opportunities have arisen for a number of permanent full-time/part-time (minimum 0.8 FTE) posts based in and across a number of teams within ESRC

Responsibilities – generic responsibilities of these posts will include :
** directly or indirectly supporting the commissioning and management of high quality research and knowledge exchange investments through collaborative partnerships as appropriate both within the UK and internationally

** drafting a range of written documents containing arguments, proposals and recommendations, which are appropriate for internal and external audiences and which may enter the public domain

** representing the ESRC and presenting aspects of the ESRC’s work at a range of external meetings, and via a range of media, with the academic community and other stakeholders, with the ability to manage challenging responses

** build and develop relationships with ESRC investment directors, funders and stakeholders
** facilitating meetings and group discussions effectively, with the ability to challenge perceptions, ideas and assumptions constructively
** analysing information from a variety of sources and expertise to inform good team and organisational decision-making and problem-solving
** line-managing one or more members of staff within ESRC and supporting teams and individuals to achieve objectives through periods of change
** providing support to and deputising for team heads as required, both in team management and external representation
** undertaking periodic work on corporate projects and schemes and support the wider work of the ESRC as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience :
Essential :
** an understanding of the work of the Research Councils

** a demonstrable enthusiasm for the importance of social science and its development and an understanding of what constitutes good social science research, as well as how it is applied in policy and professional contexts

** an undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification in the social sciences or the ability to demonstrate an equivalent level of knowledge and skills
** understanding of what makes excellent knowledge exchange and impact
** significant experience in research and research management, research commissioning or related management or administration, in the UK or internationally
** experience of working with external stakeholders (e.g. co-funding partnerships in the UK or internationally) and the ability to build excellent relationships
** sophisticated analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills
** strong project management, planning and organisation skills
** the ability to work independently, to multi-task, prioritise workloads and operate effectively within a team and project environment
** good presentation skills
** excellent oral and written communication skills
** managerial skills or an appreciation of the skills and challenges associated with staff management
** a competent grasp of budgets and financial control, including sound numeric skills

** general PC skills, including a good working knowledge of MS Office packages (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint), email and use of the internet as a search tool are a prerequisite of the post.

Desirable :
Candidates are welcome to apply who have one or some of the below criteria
** experience in working with policy/government
** in depth knowledge of the value social science brings to businesses
** understanding of peer review and its associated processes
** an understanding of research management and/or research funding in international contexts
